Psalm 118:24
This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

This is the Day!

This verse is one of those that comes up all the time in worship as a call to worship, and in daily life too, as a call to paying attention to the present day. This day – the one right in front of us right here and right now – is a day that the Lord has made. It is a gift, even on the days that feel not so special. Even on the days that we wish we could skip over. Even on the days that we would like to do over, and have them turn out differently.

This is the day that the Lord has made. The sun came up on this morning, and will set in the night. There is a rhythm to the days of our lives, given by God. A beginning, a middle and an end, and in the pattern, in that movement through time, there is grace. Whatever day you are living right now, I pray that you find something in it that you can give thanks for, rejoice in, be glad about. For this is the day!

Prayer: Dear God, Thank you for this day. Help me to lean in and live in to the gifts it has in it, to notice your presence with me, with us, every step of the way. Amen

Reflection Questions:

  1. Stop and think of a day you are particularly grateful for in the history of your life. Rejoice and be glad in that memory.
  2. How is it today with you? Can you find things to rejoice in today?
  3. Even if today doesn’t look like it will be one of your favorite days – we can know that we are not in it alone – that God is in it with us. How can you remember that good news today?
