Connecting Spiritual Dots

Isaiah 6:1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty, and the hem of his robe filled the temple.

Connecting Spiritual Dots

How do we measure the chapters of our lives? The Prophet Isaiah begins the story of his call as a prophet with the memory of an event in world history that is tangible and real. Isaiah begins his call story by thinking, ‘When did it happen –when did I have that moment in time when I recognized what God wanted me to do? In the year that King Uzziah died.’

Do we have dates that we link with our memories – or stories that connect the dots of who we are and who we’ve been? Maybe we tie our memories to world events, like when the first astronaut landed on the moon – or maybe with personal stories, like the year my little brother was born. Or maybe our spiritual journey makes us think about places – the picture at the top of the page is from my recent trip to Cedarkirk Presbyterian Camp and Conference Center in Florida, where many, many people have spiritual memories.

As I asked myself this question, important pieces of my own faith journey came flooding back. For me, it was more about grounding them in the space I was in when they happened physically and chronologically – I could see the moments, and what happened right before and right after. When we are getting ready to do what we feel called to do in a certain time, it helps to remember those other times that have helped us know we are walking with God. It helps to connect the dots of our spiritual journey.

Reflection Questions:

1) How do you order important memories in your life? Are there before and after milestones?

2) Kierkegaard says life is lived forward and understood backward. When you look back at your life so far, how do you see God in it with you?

3) If you were getting ready to make a significant change in your life, how would you make space to hear God’s call for you in it?

Prayer: Dear God, Please help me to pay attention to all the ways you have shown up in my life and led me to find my way forward. In Jesus Name, Amen
