Seeking Wisdom

Psalm 111:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Seeking Wisdom

Recently, I heard a bit of a podcast whose premise is the host having recognized she wants to learn from those who have come before her. Her guest was Julie Andrews! Who wouldn’t want to learn from the original Mary Poppins/Maria Von Trapp? Yet the reason the podcast likely exists is that it’s countercultural to look for wisdom from those who are aging. As a society we seem to be more interested in paying attention to the newest technology, and the value of those with power/money.

Let’s look again at what this passage is telling us. The fear of the Lord – also translated as the revering of the Lord – is the beginning of wisdom. Our wisdom begins not with us, at any age. Our wisdom begins in our lives when we pay attention to God. What does that look like? I think about the diversity of creation and the love experienced in this world, and the gift of God’s word speaking into our lives, crossing time and space. Could it be that the wisdom of aging comes as we learn to pay attention differently to the gifts of God? The beginning of wisdom – may it come to us here and now.

Reflection Questions:

1) What does fearing the Lord sound like to you? Have you heard the phrase translated as revere or honor?

2) If your wisdom begins with God – what does that lead you to know?

3) Do you have a favorite verse you rely on when you are seeking wisdom in your life?

Prayer: Dear God, Please show me your wisdom, and help me rely on it in. my life. In Jesus Name, Amen
