The Fountain of Life

For with you is the fountain of life;

in your light we see light. Psalm 36:9

The Fountain of Life

I was a child when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was preaching and teaching and proclaiming a new way forward. He asked us to find our way toward a fountain from God that has water flowing for each of us and all of us. As an adult, I remember being part of worship services commemorating his teachings. Sometimes we’d hear from voices who thought we’d gotten too political. But Dr. King was ultimately a preacher, and his teachings were Biblical and prophetic, and that’s what the the people of God are called to be. Not "yes" people for the status quo, but pointers toward a different way forward that challenges us to notice what God wants us to see.

It’s time. It’s time to wake up to the truth of our reality – not just our individual reality – but our reality as people together in this world. It’s time to acknowledge that a society in which children are hungry, and elders choose between food and medicine is a society whose values have gotten lost. It’s time to care for creation – to do what we can do, to say what we can say, to advocate for life for all of us being more important than wealth for some of us. It’s time to use our voices to stand up for people who are looking for new life, who are fighting for new life, and be part of the light.

Reflection Questions:

1) What do you see when you pay attention to the light of God’s love shining?

2) How can the image of the ever-flowing fountain guide your prayers and your actions this day?

3) When you see what you see, what can you do? What prayers can you pray, what gifts can you give?

Prayer: Dear God, Help us find our way toward the light you are shining. Help us be ready to show up for those in need this day. In Jesus Name, Amen
