Toward the Dawn

Toward the Dawn

Because of the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to shine upon those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1:78-79

Toward the Dawn

The sun gets up later now. Seeing a sunrise is no longer something we have to wake up really early to accomplish. The symbolism in our scripture passage is accessible on a daily basis, as a reminder that our present darkness could be followed by a new dawn. I’m thankful for that reminder, particularly on the days when the news - (personal or global) - seems to lead me toward projections of long nights, rather than daylight. The promise of the dawn breaking in reminds me to breathe.

And there’s more. There’s a promise that with the help of the tender mercy of God, the light can shine upon us, and our feet can be guided. Our feet can walk in the way of peace. Our hearts can dwell in the peace that God can provide, even when we cannot find it anywhere else. This Advent season, as we prepare for the birth of Christ, may we pay attention to our feet, and ask God to guide us toward a new day.

Reflection Questions:

1) What is the state of your soul this day? Are you feeling like you are stuck in darkness, dwelling in the light – or something else altogether?

2) Do you sense any light breaking into your soul? Try breathing really slowly, and notice if it affects your spirit.

3) What path of peace can you imagine God guiding your feet to walk?

Dear God, Help me to believe in the possibility that light and peace can break into each new day – and help me to be part of pointing that way forward. In Jesus Name, Amen
