Pouring Our My Soul
1st Samuel 1:14-15
14 So Eli said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.” 15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord.
Pouring Out My Soul
Hannah knows what it is to be disappointed. Her self-worth has been wrapped up in whether she can be a mother, and it hasn’t happened. She doubts the value of her life, and comes to God to pour out her soul. It is a very visual image when we have the context of her perceived drunkenness. Clearly, her emotions are fully present in this moment.
For many of us, the last week has brought a sense of chaos. What I'm wondering now is what we do in the face of whatever emotions are trying to be heard in our souls today. When we are disappointed do we feel free to pour out our souls to God? Can we let go of our need to be in control? Can we show up in prayer with the truth of our pain, the reality of the heaviness of our hearts? What would it take for us to be who we really are with God?
Reflection Questions:
1) What helps you be open in your relationship with God?
2) Are there places that help you pour out your soul?
3) Does music play a role in pouring out your soul?
Prayer: Lord, sometimes it is hard for me to let go of my need to be strong and in control. Help me to know I can pour out my soul to you. In Jesus Name, Amen
