Everyday Spirituality: The Blog

John 1: 38-29a

38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.”

Come and See!

The first time I ever experienced the practice of Lectio Divina (spiritual reading of the Biblical Text) it was with this passage. I imagined Jesus on the road, seeing me in my attempts to follow him, turning and asking me what I was looking for. I began to wonder what I would tell him. Then I saw the people who would be walking with me and began to imagine what they would tell him too.

We walk the roads of life sometimes aware of what we are looking for, and sometimes we walk with questions – wondering ourselves what the path we are taking is all about. As 2024 begins I am in a new place on a new road, and it helps to open myself again to this scripture. Jesus’ invitation is to Come and See! May we all find our way forward to the adventures that will happen as we choose to come and see what Jesus wants to show us in this new year.

Prayer: Dear God, Open our hearts and minds, our eyes and ears to follow you on our way forward in 2024. In Jesus Name, Amen

Reflection Questions:

  1. Try imagining yourself in this moment with Jesus inviting you to tell him what you are looking for. What would you say?
  2. How can you say yes to Jesus’ invitation to come and see?
  3. What new steps do you want to take?
