Everyday Spirituality: The Blog

Psalm 37:4

Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Delight!

What would it look like to take delight in the Lord? I’m just starting a new book a friend recommended, called Praying in Color, by Sybil MacBeth. In the introduction she already has my attention, by getting me to think about the word delight as it relates to God. I love the idea of delighting in the Lord, not because of any transactional nature of our relationship, but because I want to see God through the lens of delight.

Too often I feel like my time with God is heavy, full of prayers about what is wrong with the world. Which is okay – I need to bring those concerns, as well as prayers for the people in my life and orbit that need prayers for a variety of reasons. But I want to pay attention to the concept of Delighting in the Lord too. To celebrate with God, to pray and share what I’m excited about, what I’m thankful for, what I am dreaming about. God delights in us – loves us – views us through eyes of love. May we explore what it might be like, to take delight in the Lord.

Prayer: Dear God, Thank you for the lens of love you see us through. May we be open to delighting in you! In Jesus Name Amen

Reflection Questions:

  1. How would you define delight?
  2. Do you have an image of God that would make room for delight?
  3. What can you do to open your life to more delighting?
