Everyday Spirituality: The Blog

Psalm 31:3
You are indeed my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake lead me and guide me.

Images of God

There are four images that jump out at me in just this one verse.  Rock, fortress, leader, guide – there are times in our lives when we might look for any of these ways of describing who we want God to be for us.

We want God to give us a foundation to stand on – a way to be grounded and steady on the road. We want God to protect us for all the things that threaten harm.  We want God to tell us what to do – to make it clear.  We want God to hold our hand – to be in life with us a gentle companion on the way.

God is who God is – and God is capable of being all of these things – sometimes at the same time.  God is who God is – and we are who we are – and that means we show up, and we ask God, for God’s name’s sake to be with us and help us walk by faith down the roads of our lives. Thanks be to God!

Prayer: Dear God, Help us to find the way forward that we need to walk to be instruments of your peace and love in this world.  Amen

Reflection Questions:

  1. What image of God do you see in your mind’s eye when you pray?
  2. Do you relate to all four of these words? Which one is most often what you are looking for in your relationship with God?
  3. What other words can you list that help you see God?
